LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY FRONTIERS IN LATIN AMERICA

Prezado (a) Congressista

BELÉM DO PARÁ

Belém is located along the Amazon River estuary, near the most famous islands in the Amazon region, the Marajó Archipelago.

The capital of Pará – Belém is now 396 years way from its foundation on January 12, 1616. It is certainly one of the largest and oldest cities in the North of the country. It stretches over an area of approximately 1,064.918 km ² and is the home of approximately 2.2 million inhabitants (IBGE, 2010).

Historically, Belém was considered the entrance gate to the Northern region of Brazil, with a privileged geographical location by the Guamá river, near the mouth of the Amazon River. It houses the modern International Airport of Val de Cans. Situated at the northern end of BR-316 highway (northeast), BR-010 (Belém-Brasília) and PA-150 (loop road), Belém can be easily reached by land, air and river, one of the main entrances to the entire Northern Region.
